Auctioneering is in my blood, mate! I am a third-generation pro, trained in the art of the live-call auction. First-century antiques, houses, fine arts, live fish, fruit and veggies, to industrial gear—I’ve auctioned it all. Worked with the big guns at Mason Gray Strange, rubbed shoulders with James R Lawson Fine Arts – Sydney and Brisbane, Rod Hyman Asset Services – Sydney, and McQueen Auctioneers and  Valuers in Canberra. I’ve kept the auctions rolling in the major capitals! I was even privileged enough to assist in the Sydney Mardi Gras disposal auctions in the early noughties! That was a lot of fun.

From Pallets to Poultry Royalty, rising from the pain
My first auction gig was in Albury when I was 18, selling furniture at the Albury Auction Rooms. In ’86, Rae and I created Metry’s Poultry Farm, growing, buying and selling everything from day-old chicks to point-of-lay pullets. In 1990, after my first daughter died, I was asked to do an auciton at Euroa Showgrounds. Little did I know, it was the lifeline I needed. I sold 400 pens in 3 hours, and it saved me! This brought me back to life, after such a devastating loss. From there, my auction work took me to Sydney and then auctioneering up and down the coast, from Noosa down to Launceston.  I’ve managed auctions for celebrities, national and local poultry clubs and shows, and appeared on the ABC Antique show as an auctioneer. Industrial auctioneers are very animated, compared with traditional fine-art auctioneers. People at the ABC Antique Show said I was the most animated auctioneer they had ever seen! I was once privileged to help Sydney Royal Show establish their first auction! It’s not just been a career; it’s a love story with every cluck and crow. 

The Metry Comeback
My life’s has had its share of struggles, losing my wife Raelene to cancer in 2020. But in 2023, newly partnered, I’m back, reviving my poultry and auctioneering passion.
